Designer Series: Simple and Clean with @hulovesdecor

Julia Hu of @hulovesdecor is taking over the studio as our February 2023 designer for our Designer Series. She came in with a bubbling glow and a can-do attitude. When we found her Instagram feed, we fell in love with how gorgeously she has designed her home. The sleek modern aesthetic really appealed to us. We love how she uses very muted neutral colors such as whites, grays, blacks and golds to create a mid-century modern look all throughout her home. She uses her platform to show off her amazingly decorated house that she has been living in for with her family for over 3 years. One of the rooms that we are obsessed with is how she designed her flex room into a home theater. It is one of our favorite rooms we’ve seen. It’s fun but also keeping with the color and style scheme with the rest of the house.

A little bit about Julia is that she is a wife and mother of one beautiful baby boy. She works in digital marketing and graduates with a degree in Marketing from UC Berkley. Julia was born and raised in Southern California and loves living the SoCal lifestyle. She enjoys using her platform to express her creativity and décor skills. Currently, her preferred interior style is mid-century modern. After trying out different styles in the past, Julia feels as if she’s found her true match in the muted streamlined style. Her style is very minimalist yet focuses on maximizing each space by choosing furniture pieces that are, still neutral-based of course, functional yet stylish. Julia shows us how to pull off a simple, clean, yet modern look that works.

The Plan

Julia takes two of our most neutral styled furniture pieces to create minimalist mid-century modern inspired rooms.

The Prep

Combined a blend of in-store furniture accents, studio props, and Julia’s own accent pieces to achieve these looks.

Welcome to the bedroom sanctuary of your dreams! Be carried away from the busyness of the world and transported to a calming tranquil bedroom that lets you relax and not worry about the chaos of the outside world. That is the way that Julia brought this design to life. Her use of neutral colors creates a wonderful calming sensation throughout the room. The Sergio Upholstered Panel Bed in Gray, Eastern King was a great choice because the gray color and textured upholstery adds to the relaxing atmosphere of the room. She dressed the bed with white sheets and shams then topped it off with the Gariland Throw Blanket in White giving the bed an organized messy feeling while also being completely purposeful in the execution. The front pillows are a beige off-white patterned to break up the bright and give the bed more texture. Suffice to say we love the way that Julia made a mix of messy and clean to bring the Sergio bed as the featured product of the design. She then added the Melbourne Nightstands in Brown bringing a neutral muted brown into the room. The Shavon Table Lamps are a great pick because of their oval shape and beige-toned lampshades that match the pillows. The bedside accents on top of the nightstands bring balance and a tranquil setting to the overall look of the room. We love the geometric potted orchid and candle holder placed on stacked books that help complement the white/neutral themed design. For added accent décor, Julia added size and texture with the Galice Accent Ottoman in White on top of the Granada Rug in Washed Ivory 8x10 in the middle of the room. Finally, she added a curtain in the corner of the studio wall as a faux window for color contrast while keeping with a relaxing ambiance of the room. This bedroom oozes vacation vibes combined with a calming sense of staycation energy.

Room Design #2: Somerset Dining Table + Chairs

Julia did outstanding work with this living room design. Her take with the mid-century modern style elevated the studio space to a spectacular degree. The Lucy Tux Sectional in Splash Linen, Left Facing sits snuggly in the corner with three lush Emmy Accent Pillows in Effie Linen and the signature Gariland Throw Blanket in White placed onto the couch. Over the sofa she hung the Hallwood Wall Art in Multi which was such an exquisite addition. We can’t get over how clean the design looks. It is very refreshing and doesn’t feel cluttered at all. We love how Julia is such a minimalist but can accentuate the pieces so excellently. Such as with the Kisper Coffee Table in Brown decorated with coffee table books, some organic element with the mini faux plant, and the Posy Tray in Gold casually placed in the bottom compartment. Keeping the tables uniformed, Julia used the matching Kisper End Table in Brown and styled it with contrasting light-colored accent décor using white orchids and the Hannel Small Vase. We all know that the Louise Accent Chair in Sherpa White is a designer series favorite, and we can see why! It is so versatile that it fits into many different styles. The fluffy sherpa accent chair has a wooden frame that matches with the end table and the coffee table which completes the cohesive look. Finally, she added the Granada Rug in Dodge Blue, 8x10 as a soft addition to the design. The rug acts as the perfect foundation of the room and completes the whole look. The best part about this living room design is how easy it can be executed in any given space. It could easily fit into any home and can be replicated to fit a desired space. We applaud Julia for her attention to detail and her keen sense of style.
