Designer Series: Mid-Century Modern Classics with Catrina Camp
We’ve come full circle with the last Designer of the Year! It’s been a wild ride of wonderfully creative individuals who’ve expressed their creative talents in our studio. We saved the best for last with Catrina Camp from ASR Design Studio! She is a young up and coming interior designer hailing from the East Coast. She came to California and attended the Design Institute of San Diego for a bachelor’s degree of Fine Arts in Interior Design. She loves roller-skating, the beach, and the great outdoors, which she tends to incorporate into her designs. Speaking of designs, Catrina’s love for interior styling came from her grandmother who inspired and supported her love of home design. She also found inspiration from watching home improvement TV shows such as TLC’s Trading Spaces which helped with her problem-solving skills as a designer.
Her go-to design style is mid-century modern. As it is sleek but also pulls from older aesthetic shapes and trends but additionally turns them into an updated look which appeals to current modern trends but adds a timeless feel.
After graduating college, she snagged her first design role at ASR Design Studio and is currently a Lead Designer. The smaller design studio makes a more intimate relationship with their clients, and she has been able to work on so many amazing projects to show off her skills!
We’re so glad to have such a fresh new perspective in our studio and are excited to see the outcome!
The Plan
We provided Catrina with the Petrillo 3 Power Sofa in Gray for the first set, and the Duo Linen Adjustable Foundation California King Bed in Gray for the second set.
The Prep
She styled each room using a blend of Mor Furniture accents as well as her own décor pieces brought in from the ASR Design Studio collection.
Set #1: Petrillo 3 Power Sofa in Gray
Catrina’s take on a mature masculine mid-century style man cave to relax and create your personal memories in. It exudes a musical studio vibe that’ll get the creative juices flowing. We loved how she took the route of an androgynous style room – a first in our studio – and was done effortlessly so. The Petrillo 3 Power Sofa in Gray looks very comfortable and relaxing under the curated musically inspired artwork gallery. The geometrical sharpness of the Paradox Coffee Table in Multi fits perfectly as it leans into the mid-century modern style. The accents placed on the coffee table are simple but look lived in. It sits on the textured and shapely animal skin rugs brought in by Catrina that helped define the foundation of this living room design. The rugs placed on top of each other feature irregular shapes and imperfect edges that help with breaking up too much symmetry in the room. Speaking of geometrical symmetry, the Trailbend Accent Tables on both sides of the sofa are the perfect side tables for this mid-century style room because of its simple design and hard stark lines bringing balance to the space. For lighting, Catrina added the Baronvale Desk Lamps on each side to bring a dark contrast against the neutral gray sofa.
Can we talk about the accents she placed on the two Natures Edge 5-Shelf Bookcase in Brown? The décor on the shelves adds so much character to the room and too easily can shelves become cluttered, but she made these shelves look full of life and personality. The record player builds on the theme of the musical mancave while the books and globe help tie the well-read and studious atmosphere that mid-century likes to lean towards. Lastly, the Benny Swivel Chair & Ottoman in Smoke, which is her favorite piece by the way, rests at the opposite side of the sofa. It is the perfect last addition with its retro curves and wooden undertones that bring the whole room together.
